A few decades ago, citizens of India, mostly were illiterate; they were unable to read or write. But still, they actively participated in electing their representative for the parliament.
People saw the character of the candidate and did cast their vote on the symbol allocated for that candidate. Just because he or she had money; just because he or she did campaign good, people would not cast their vote for that candidate. People did see the character and integrity of that candidate.
Now, all candidates are dummy. People don't even bother to know the name of the candidate. People vote for the trade mark. The more popular trade mark gets more votes.
George Fernandes was in the prison. People did vote for his character and integrity.
Even the political parties make heavy investment on their trade marks.
Election symbol was introduced to facilitate our grand old fathers and mothers. Now, we are in the Twitter age; but still we have symbols on our ballot.
Afghanistan, Iraq and other emerging democracy can have symbols. But, India; people should understand the need for symbols in the ballot.
Symbol on the ballot is a demonstration of our intelligence to the rest of the world.
We are the first one to have electronic voting machine; but symbols on that voting machine looks very ugly.
The candidate need to have an option; no symbol for me; just my name.
The Election Commission of India should make the symbol as an option; not a standard feature.
The candidate should say, during this campaign I will educate my fellow citizens to read my name in Hindi as well as in English. People will vote for that candidate.
Once you remove the symbol, good character, responsible citizens will participate in building healthy democracy.
Now, people go to the party office only to get the election symbol.
When election symbol is removed from the ballot, there was no need to seek for party sponsorship; they directly file their form and participate in the election.
Another thing is, people are made to believe that they directly elect the Prime Minister of India.
No. People elect their representative for the parliament.
People elect and send their representative to build the nation.
People are now under the impression that, their elected representative go to Delhi and collect and bring back their share of wealth.
Member of Parliament is just like a soldier in the military. It is all about sacrifice and contribution.
When a mother send a soldier to the field; she was not calculating the return that the soldier will bring back home.
It is a sacrifice.
Don't ask what does the nation do for you; ask what you could do for the nation.
Let people know, only one MP can become a Prime Minister; so your MP cannot become a Prime Minister. So, you better elect a good character and send that person to the parliament.
Don't ask your candidate, what could he or she do for your constituency?
Ask your candidate, what could he or she do for the nation?
When people value good character; they will elect good character as their representative.
As long as people irresponsible, they will elect a dummy as their representative.
The focus should be on the character of each individual candidate. It should not be on the Prime Minister.
These Prime Minister candidates try to make all candidates as dummy candidates.
In turn, all these dummy candidates will make the people dummy.
The media may bring the quality and character of each individual candidates.
They are going to build the nation.
At work, will you select a dummy candidate for the job. If you select a dummy candidate, then how could you expect excellent performance from them.
If we elect dummy as our representative and send that dummy to the parliament, then how could we expect excellent performance from those dummies.
Dummy representative will make other dummy.
So, media; don't go after the propaganda.
Bring the fact about the quality, character of all candidates of each constituency.
Ask them about their objectives and plan for the nation.
Ask them why do you want to be the representative of the people.
Let the candidate feel that it is like a soldier selection for the army.
If we get right kind of ingredients; good quality vegetables, then naturally the food we make will be healthy.
But we don't pay any attention on the selection of ingredients; then how could we expect good quality food.
So, election is not a tamasha or entertainment.
Pay attention on the quality and character of the candidate. Make sure no dummy candidate go to the parliament as the representative of the people.
