The Jallianwala Bagh massacre was carried out on 13 April 1919. The British government had decided to put most of the Punjab under martial law. The legislation restricted a number of civil liberties, including freedom of assembly; gatherings of more than four people were banned. The official figures given were only 379 killed and 200 wounded.
Rabindranath Tagore received the news of the massacre by 22 May 1919. He tried to arrange a protest meeting in Calcutta and finally decided to renounce his knighthood as "a symbolic act of protest".
When Gandhi learned about the massacre (it took many weeks for the whole story to emerge), his initial reaction was criticize not only the British for the massacre itself, but also the Indians for the mob rampage (including the murders and assaults on British residents) that followed.
C.F. Andrews, who had already reached the
Punjab, wrote to Gandhi and begged him to come at once. Gandhi wanted to go,
but his repeated requests for permission to visit the place were turned down
by the Government. Finally, in October that year, the Viceroy permitted him
to visit the Punjab, and Gandhi went.
On his arrival at Lahore railway station,
Gandhi found that almost the entire population of the city was there waiting
for him.
People in the south had not received this news at all.
That was the state of communication at that age. Now it is different.
Global communication is almost in real time.
Nobody has imagined that Arvind Kejriwal would take a trip to Gujarat for fact finding.
Once upon a time, BJP was considered as a national party equivalent to Congress.
Now it is reduced to a regional party of Gujarat state.
In such a short time, people have forgotten the face of other leaders of BJP; soon they may forget the names too.
BJP party workers want Modi to contest from their constituency; they do not want anyone else to represent their constituency.
Almost all are targeting on Gujarat state. If possible, one by one will visit Gujarat. Media will capture the state of affairs of local, village administration.
In India, we do not empower the local administration. So, naturally they are not effective. It is the same for all states. It is a fact everyone knows.
But, people living in other states are under the impression that Gujarat has developed in all aspects right from the village to the city. Almost milk and honey are flowing on the streets of Gujarat.
Media is going to be busy in the villages of Gujarat. Soon, people will realize the fact the other side of the river always appear to be greener than your town.
It was not the case earlier. Even with worst corruption in Karnataka, BJP national image was not affected.
But this Modi propaganda will bring down BJP. It is a single point of failure.
Congress needs to thank Lord Rama. People have completely forgotten all corruption and busy in all kinds of tamasha like drinking chai etc. People do enjoy Narendra Modi entertainment.
In America, the entire nation goes to poll on a single day. It is November 4th of every leap year.
We have polling going on for more than a month. That is the best strategy for India.
You can fool people for a day or for a week; but not for six weeks.
Propaganda will not work for this kind of prolonged schedule.
Whether you talk in Patna or in Chennai, every word reaches the whole of India.
So, you cannot say something to attract one state; that may fire back at you in another state.
Media and people do enjoy political entertainment; they want to see many faces on the dais; many variations of speech.
Very soon, people will get fed up with seeing the same face of Narendra Modi all over media; internet; face book. People may get bored with repetion of speech.
Strong regional leaders are getting stronger. Weak national parties are getting weaker.
