Ladies challenge Narendra Modi

Jashodaben What explains a secret wife? According to Jashodaben's accounting, she and Modi were married when they were 17 and 18 due to an arrangement between their parents. They were a couple for three years before separating, with Modi reportedly going to travel the Himalayas, and never coming back.

‘Abki baar Modi Sarkar’, the BJP’s main slogan this election, has undergone a slight change in Sushma Swaraj’s constituency to restore parity between the two leaders.

The bigger, round-shaped stickers pasted on some cars, carry the same message that Swaraj gives in her speeches: “Modi is the official PM candidate declared by the party”.

While other leaders like Rajnath Singh never shy away from calling Modi the most popular choice, Swaraj makes the distinction that he is the party’s candidate. She does not name him in every rally though.

The backdrop to her rallies, after she filed her nomination papers, is provided by posters that read: ‘Bhajapa Lao Desh Bachao’ with equal space to the photographs of Modi and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Before she filed her nomination, she would rarely mention Modi while addressing workers’ conventions, and stress on ‘Mission 29’ and to increase her victory margin to four lakh to make her the ‘number one’ parliamentarian.

She still talks of the margin, but seeks votes citing Modi’s decision-making ability, Chouhan’s popularity and the failures of the Congress-led UPA.

Sonia feels comfortable as others are challenging Narendra Modi.

"His (Modi) becoming a Prime Minister is a fantasy. So, I don't need to answer this hypothetical question," Ms Banerjee told PTI in an interview here when asked whether she expected better financial treatment in the event of Modi becoming the Prime Minister.

"The Federal Front is the future. A Federal Front government will be formed after the elections," Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, said.

She said, "Let me give you an example of how the Congress and BJP say something and do something else. They have talked about 33 per cent reservation for women in the Women's Reservation Bill. Do you know what percentage of their candidates are women?"

The BJP has only 8 per cent women candidates and the Congress has 14 per cent. Trinamool Congress is proud to have 27 per cent women candidates. We do not make false promises in our manifesto. Our manifesto is for the people, of the people and by the people," she said describing the manifesto as 'sacred'.
